Flutter Had Everything Going for It. So Why Are Developers Still Hesitating?

There is something strange about Flutter.

If you look at the technology itself, it is difficult to understand why it hasn’t completely taken over cross-platform development.

The framework has Google’s backing. It gives developers a single codebase for multiple platforms. It has its own rendering engine, hot reload, a huge package ecosystem, strong documentation, an increasingly mature architecture and an active roadmap. Companies ranging from Toyota and SoFi to talabat, Zoho, KQED and Holafly are publicly listed by Flutter as production users.

And the developers who actually use it often seem to like it.

Flutter’s Q2 2026 developer survey collected more than 3,500 responses and reported 93% positive overall satisfaction. Trust in Flutter to consistently meet developers’ needs rose to 83%. Dart scored 92% satisfaction and the core framework scored 90%.

So here is the question that bothers me:

If Flutter is this good, why aren’t companies everywhere abandoning native development and moving to it?

The answer has very little to do with whether Flutter can build a good application.

It can.

The problem is that companies don’t choose technology based only on how good the technology is.
