## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## GLEIF LEI Scraper

Search and extract legal entity data from the [GLEIF (Global LEI Foundation)](https://www.gleif.org) database — the authoritative global register of Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs). Covers 2M+ entities across 200+ countries. Completely free, no authentication required.

### Data Source

This actor uses the [GLEIF API](https://www.gleif.org/en/lei-data/gleif-api), a publicly available REST API provided by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation. No API key or registration is required.

### Features

- **Search entities** by company name or keyword across 2M+ global legal entities
- **Fetch by LEI code** — look up specific entities using their 20-character LEI
- **Filter by status** — ISSUED (active), LAPSED, RETIRED, ANNULLED, and more
- **Filter by country** — narrow results to a specific country using ISO 2-letter code
- Structured output with LEI, entity name, type, jurisdiction, address, registration dates
- Fully free — no API key, no proxy, no cookies

### Input

| Field | Type | Description |
|-------|------|-------------|
| `mode` | String (required) | `search` or `getByLEI` |
| `query` | String | Company name or keyword (mode=search) |

- **KYC / AML compliance** — verify legal entity identity and registration status
- **Business intelligence** — research companies by jurisdiction, country, or name
- **Financial data enrichment** — link counterparties to their official LEI records
- **Regulatory reporting** — identify and validate LEI codes for trading entities
- **Due diligence** — check entity registration history and managing LOU

### FAQ

**What is a LEI (Legal Entity Identifier)?**
A LEI is a 20-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies legal entities participating in financial transactions. It is mandated by financial regulators in many jurisdictions.

**Is an API key required?**
No. The GLEIF API is publicly accessible with no registration or authentication.

**What does ISSUED vs LAPSED status mean?**
`ISSUED` means the entity's LEI registration is current and valid. `LAPSED` means the registration has expired (not renewed). The entity may still be active — only the LEI renewal has lapsed.

**How many entities are in GLEIF?**
The GLEIF database contains 2M+ legal entities from 200+ countries, primarily financial institutions, banks, funds, and corporates.

**What is a Managing LOU?**
The Local Operating Unit (LOU) is the organization authorized to issue and manage LEIs in a jurisdiction. Examples include Bloomberg, DTCC, and London Stock Exchange Group.
