## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## 👽 Reddit Scraper — Posts & Comments by Subreddit or Search

**Scrape Reddit posts and comments from any subreddit or search query — title, author, score, upvote ratio, text, and metadata — as clean structured data. No login, no API key.**

Export to CSV, Excel, JSON, or Google Sheets, or pull via the Apify API.

***

### ✨ What you get

**Per post**

| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| title / author | "Show HN: …" · u/example |
| subreddit | technology |
| score / upvoteRatio | 4210 · 0.96 |
| numComments | 318 |
| text | self-post body |
| url / linkUrl | Reddit permalink + linked URL |
| flair, createdAt, over18 | metadata |

**Optional per-post comments:** author, body, score, createdAt.

***

### 🎯 Who it's for

- **Market & product research** — mine subreddits for pain points, feature requests, and sentiment.
- **Brand monitoring** — track mentions of your product or competitors.
- **Trend spotting** — pull top/rising posts in any niche.
- **AI / datasets** — collect text for training, RAG, or analysis.
- **Lead generation** — find people asking for the solution you sell.

***

### 🚀 How to use it

1. Add **subreddits** (e.g. `technology`, `r/AskReddit`) **and/or** **search queries**.
2. Choose a **sort** (`hot`, `new`, `top`, `rising`, `controversial`) and, for `top`, a **time range**.
3. Set **max posts**, and optionally enable **comments**.
4. Click **Start** and export.

***

### 📥 Example input

```json
{
  "subreddits": ["technology", "r/programming"],
  "sort": "top",
  "time": "week",
  "maxItems": 100,
  "includeComments": false
}
```

Search across Reddit:

```json
{
  "searchQueries": ["best crm for small business"],
  "sort": "top",
  "time": "year",
  "maxItems": 50
}
```

***

### 📤 Example output

```json
{
  "type": "post",
  "id": "1abcd23",
  "subreddit": "technology",
  "title": "A new open-source tool just dropped",
  "author": "example_user",
  "score": 4210,
  "upvoteRatio": 0.96,
  "numComments": 318,
  "createdAt": "2026-07-15T14:22:10.000Z",
  "text": "Here's what it does...",
  "url": "https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1abcd23/...",
  "flair": "Software"
}
```

### ❓ FAQ

**Do I need a Reddit account or API key?**
No. It reads Reddit's public JSON — just give it subreddits or search terms.

**Can I get comments too?**
Yes — enable **Include comments** and set how many per post. It's slower, so leave it off for large post-only pulls.

**How many posts can I get?**
Reddit paginates listings; the Actor follows pages up to your **Max posts** limit per subreddit / query.

**Is scraping Reddit legal?**
It collects publicly available content. You're responsible for complying with Reddit's terms and applicable laws, and for how you use the data.

# Actor input Schema

## `subreddits` (type: `array`):

Subreddit names or URLs, e.g. "technology", "r/AskReddit", or a full subreddit URL.

## `searchQueries` (type: `array`):

Optional. Reddit-wide search terms, e.g. "chatgpt". Each returns matching posts.

## `sort` (type: `string`):

How to order posts.

## `time` (type: `string`):

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of posts to scrape per subreddit / search query.

## `includeComments` (type: `boolean`):

Also scrape the top comments of each post (slower).

## `maxCommentsPerPost` (type: `integer`):

How many comments to scrape per post when comments are enabled.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Reddit blocks datacenter traffic, so a residential proxy is used to render pages reliably. Included in your Apify plan.
