## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Continente Portugal Scraper

Scrape the Continente Portugal supermarket (continente.pt) by keyword and get clean, structured product data: names, brands, prices, unit prices, categories, images and optional EAN barcodes.

Continente is Portugal's largest supermarket chain. This actor reads its server-rendered catalogue directly, so you get fast, reliable grocery data without a login, cookies or a browser. Turn on EAN capture to match products to their barcodes.

### Why use this actor?

If you track grocery prices, match products by barcode, build a price-comparison tool, or feed a market-research dataset, you need structured product data you can rely on. This actor turns any Continente search into a table of products with prices in EUR, unit prices and (optionally) EAN barcodes.

Typical users:

- Price-intelligence and price-comparison platforms tracking Portuguese retail.
- Brands and suppliers matching their catalogue by EAN barcode.
- Market researchers and analysts building grocery datasets.
- Developers who need a clean product feed instead of scraping HTML themselves.

### How to scrape Continente data

1. Open the actor in the Apify Console.
2. Enter a **search query** in Portuguese — for example `leite`, `café`, `azeite` or `arroz`.
3. Set **maxResults** to how many products you want.
4. Optionally enable **Fetch EAN barcodes** to capture each product's barcode from its product page (slower — one extra request per product).
5. Leave the proxy on the default Apify setting and click **Start**.
6. When the run finishes, download the results as JSON, CSV, Excel or feed them to an API.

The actor requests Continente's search pages, walks the pagination for your query, de-duplicates by product id, and writes one clean record per product. With EAN capture on, it also opens each product page to read the barcode.

### Input

| Field | Type | Required | Description |
|-------|------|----------|-------------|
| `searchQuery` | String | No | Keyword to search in Portuguese (default: `leite`) |
| `maxResults` | Integer | No | Maximum products to return (default: 100) |
| `fetchDetails` | Boolean | No | Open each product page to capture the EAN barcode (slower, default: false) |
| `proxyConfiguration` | Object | No | Apify proxy settings (default Apify proxy works) |

#### Example input

```json
{
    "searchQuery": "leite",
    "maxResults": 20,
    "fetchDetails": true,
    "proxyConfiguration": { "useApifyProxy": true }
}
```

### Output

Each result contains:

| Field | Type | Example |
|-------|------|---------|
| `productName` | String | `"Leite UHT Meio Gordo Continente"` |
| `brand` | String | `"Continente"` |
| `price` | Number | `0.86` |
| `currency` | String | `"EUR"` |
| `unitPrice` | String | `"0,86€/lt"` |
| `originalPrice` | Number | `1.09` |
| `discount` | String | `"-21%"` |
| `category` | String | `"Lacticínios e Ovos > Leite > Meio Gordo"` |
| `sku` | String | `"6879912"` |
| `productId` | String | `"6879912"` |
| `ean` | String | `"5601312508007"` |
| `imageUrl` | String | Primary product image URL |
| `url` | String | Full product page URL |
| `scrapedAt` | String | ISO 8601 timestamp |

`ean` is present only when **fetchDetails** is enabled. `originalPrice` and `discount` are present only on promoted products.

### Example output

```json
{
    "productName": "Leite UHT Meio Gordo Continente",
    "brand": "Continente",
    "price": 0.86,
    "currency": "EUR",
    "unitPrice": "0,86€/lt",
    "category": "Lacticínios e Ovos > Leite > Meio Gordo",
    "sku": "6879912",
    "productId": "6879912",
    "ean": "5601312508007",
    "imageUrl": "https://www.continente.pt/dw/image/v2/.../leite-uht-meio-gordo.jpg",
    "url": "https://www.continente.pt/produto/leite-uht-meio-gordo-continente-continente-6879912.html",
    "scrapedAt": "2026-07-12T09:00:00.000Z"
}
```

### Notes and limitations

- Prices are the current online prices in EUR.
- **EAN barcodes** require `fetchDetails: true`. That opens one product page per result, so large runs take much longer — raise the run timeout for a big catalogue pull.
- The run is migration-safe: if Apify moves a long run between hosts, it resumes without re-fetching or duplicating products already delivered.
- `originalPrice` and `discount` appear only when a product is on promotion.

### Cost

Pricing is pay-per-result. A keyword search without EAN capture completes in about a minute. With EAN capture, expect roughly one extra request per product, so budget more run time for large keyword sets.

# Actor input Schema

## `searchQuery` (type: `string`):

Keyword to search the Continente catalogue in Portuguese (e.g. 'leite', 'café', 'azeite').

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of products to return across all result pages.

## `fetchDetails` (type: `boolean`):

Open each product page to capture its EAN / barcode. This adds one request per product, so runs take much longer. For large runs, raise the run timeout accordingly.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Apify proxy settings. The default Apify (datacenter) proxy works — continente.pt is not geo-locked.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "searchQuery": "leite",
  "maxResults": 20,
  "fetchDetails": false,
  "proxyConfiguration": {
    "useApifyProxy": true,
    "apifyProxyGroups": [
      "RESIDENTIAL"
    ]
  }
}
```
