One Thing I Wish Someone Had Told Me 30 Years Ago About Life

I guess I needed the lesson, but knowing this sooner would have made life much easier.

Often, the little things you learn in life make the biggest difference. 30 years ago, I thought I was on the right track. I was a qualified counsellor, psychology nerd, and explorer of life.

I was bound to run into drama.

These days, I know most drama is unnecessary. Well, as long as you recognise why not overreacting matters. Until then, it keeps showing up, and you don’t even see that you’re often responsible for creating it.

I recall many theatrics unfolding, and I thought they came to greet me like the tide when I’m barefoot on the beach. I was their victim, though I didn’t see it that way. What I really needed to learn was that I had the power to get out of the way instead of letting them wash over me.

Worse still, I didn’t only stay smack bang in the middle of melodrama. I hate to admit I sometimes made it expand. These days, remembering that makes me wince a little. Although I do forgive myself.

You don’t know life’s lessons until you understand them, and that can mean facing the same ones over and over.
