Gurus enjoy silence for good reasons. While many people find quietness awkward, boring, or uncomfortable, wisdom-keepers have revered silence’s openness and harmony for aeons. You can only find pure peace in stillness, away from the commotion of the busy world. But a guru’s love of silence arises from at least seven reasons.

Connecting with the self

Sometimes it’s hard to connect with your true thoughts and feelings when your surroundings buzz with noise and chaos. Even when things are going well, if you’re busy and the environment is too, you can’t find yourself.

While many people practice spirituality to move into silence as a way to disconnect from the self, many more go there to find themselves. Both practices are common for wisdom-keepers.

To use silence to discover more about yourself, find a quiet place. It could be your room or a place in nature where the only sounds are birds singing and the wind rustling through leaves. As you walk or sit, reflect on how you feel about aspects of your life and decide what to do next. Or, you can work out personal problems without the interference of the outside world.
