Is Dark Romance a Toxic Genre for Women?
Depending on how it is treated, it can even become dangerous.
When I started reading fiction again and discovered a genre called “dark romance,” I must confess I was astonished.
Back when I was younger and an avid reader, romance was the only genre that explored romance and other themes. Some romances had elaborate plots involving mafia, stepbrothers, or vampires, but at the end of the day they were still just romances. But as books evolved, publishers had to separate dark romance and fantasy romance from regular romance, because the themes they explored had changed so much that they couldn’t be categorized the same way anymore.
This separation gave dark romance the freedom to explore thousands of new themes without any limits, all under the excuse that it’s “just dark romance, so everything is allowed.” Kidnapping, stalking, abuse, violence, things that would never fly in a regular romance novel became normal, even expected, in this genre.
And that’s where the debate comes in. Some people say dark romance is harmless, just a way to explore taboo subjects in a safe, fictional space. Others say it’s toxic, that it romanticizes dangerous behavior and warps how women see real relationships. So which is it? Is dark romance actually bad for women, or is it just…
