Mastering the Vibe: Claude Code Best Practices That Actually Work
How I went from fumbling with AI-generated spaghetti code to building production-ready apps with Claude Code
Three months ago, I was that developer who would throw a vague prompt at Claude Code, cross my fingers, and hope for the best. The results? Well, let’s just say I spent more time debugging AI-generated mess than I would have writing the code myself.
Fast forward to today, and Claude Code has become my go-to pair programmer. Not because the technology magically got better (though it did), but because I learned to work with it instead of just talking at it.

The Foundation: Your .claude File is Your Best Friend

This isn’t just configuration — it’s how you teach Claude to understand your specific codebase, conventions, and quirks.
Here’s what changed everything for me:

The Planning Revolution: Stop Coding, Start Thinking
Here’s where most people get Claude Code wrong: they treat it like a faster autocomplete. But the real power comes from asking Claude to make a plan before coding and explicitly telling it not to code until you’ve confirmed that its plan looks good.
Plan Mode: Your New Secret Weapon
Plan Mode is activated by pressing Shift+Tab twice. In this mode, Claude becomes a research and analysis machine that can’t actually change any files. It’s like putting Claude in “architect mode” — it can observe, analyze, and plan, but never execute until you approve.
Plan Mode forces Claude to deliver consistently formatted responses in reasonable verbosity, which solves one of my biggest frustrations with inconsistent AI outputs.
When should you use Plan Mode?
- Starting any new feature (this is non-negotiable for me now)
- Complex refactoring that touches multiple files
- Debugging when you’re not sure what’s causing the issue
- Architecture decisions that affect multiple components
The workflow is simple but powerful:
- Enter Plan Mode (Shift+Tab twice)
- Describe what you want to achieve
- Let Claude research your codebase and create a comprehensive plan
- Review and refine the plan (don’t accept the first version!)
- Exit Plan Mode and execute
The Think Hard Hierarchy: When to Use Your AI’s Brain
Not all prompts are created equal, and Claude Code has different levels of reasoning depth. The thinking levels work in a hierarchy: “think” < “think hard” < “think harder” < “ultrathink”.
I use these strategically:
- “think”: For straightforward feature additions or bug fixes
- “think hard”: When dealing with complex business logic or architectural decisions
- “think harder”: For performance optimization or security-sensitive code
- “ultrathink”: Reserved for the really gnarly problems — legacy code integration, complex algorithms, or when I’m completely stuck
Here’s the thing though — don’t just throw “ultrathink” at everything. The specific phrases are mapped directly to increasing levels of thinking budget in the system, and you’ll pay in both time and tokens for that extra computation.
The Art of Teaching Claude to Ask Questions
One of my biggest breakthroughs was learning to encourage Claude to ask questions during the planning phase. Instead of assuming Claude knows what I want, I now explicitly prompt for clarification:
“Before you start planning the user authentication system, ask me questions about the requirements. I want to make sure we’re building exactly what’s needed.”
This simple change transformed my results. Claude started asking things like:
- “Do you want social login options, or just email/password?”
- “Should we store user preferences locally or in the database?”
- “What’s your plan for handling password resets?”
These questions often reveal assumptions I didn’t even realize I was making.
Persisting Your Plans: The External Memory Trick
Writing a plan to an external source (like plan.md) and using it as a checklist is one of those simple ideas that’s surprisingly powerful. Instead of keeping everything in the chat history, I now have Claude create actual files for complex projects:

While auto-accept mode lets Claude work autonomously, you’ll typically get better results by being an active collaborator and guiding Claude’s approach. I learned to:
- Review every plan before execution (Plan Mode makes this easy)
- Course-correct actively rather than letting Claude go down rabbit holes
- Break complex changes into smaller steps that can be verified independently
- Use the escape key liberally to interrupt when things go off track
Final thoughts
After implementing these practices consistently, my Claude Code sessions became dramatically more predictable and useful. Instead of generating code I had to extensively debug and rewrite, I started getting implementations that were remarkably close to production-ready.
