The idea behind the moving bubbles chart is different from most other visualizations. There are no axes. There are no coordinates. Instead, every entity in your dataset becomes a bubble, and that bubble moves between named regions on the screen as its state changes over time. You watch, monitor, and track how the simulation plays forward, and the clustering tells you more than any static chart could. In this blog, I’ll walk through the D3Blocks-MovingBubbles chart to demonstrate how it works as a storytelling tool first, and then how it gives you granular control over coloring, sizing, timing, and standardization to match the structure of your data.
