A Single Review Solved Self-Help
Underneath all of the noise of the industry, the solution is simpler.
One of the biggest lies that I ever told myself when I became a guru was that growing had to be tough and complicated. Leaning a little into hustle culture mindsets, I believed that all goals had to be tough and engaging in order to be fulfilling and satisfying. Meanwhile, the journey we all take must have layers upon layers of strategies, techniques, and mindsets in order to have everything working.
Self-help felt like assembling a Rube Goldberg machine, and growth was setting it in motion and watching it go through the sequence of steps you carefully put in place.
But as I’ve been working in this industry, the more I’ve come to realize how that thought process is wrong.
Absolutely, there is a kernel of truth to goals having to be tough and engaging to a degree. I’ve learned firsthand how SMART goals can dilute and ultimately bore people because they offer little to no substance. I’m well aware of how chasing those high highs that gurus promise can be empty, and we convince ourselves that we need them even though they are distracting.
Self-help as a whole is noisy when it comes to that, as I’m sure some SMART goal enthusiasts would disagree with my opinion.
