Blow out the candle and see what’s left
I visited an apartment last month that smelled wonderful.
Cedar and something warm, like a bakery that closed an hour ago.
It came from a single candle on the coffee table..
The room around it was a different story..
One overhead light. A sofa pushed against the wrong wall. A TV the size of the window.
Nothing in it was wrong enough to notice.
Nothing was right enough to feel.
So the candle was doing all the work.
That’s what I mean by emotional labor.
We ask a small object to make a whole room feel cared for.
It’s a heavy job for something that burns down.
I get why we do it.
A candle is the fastest, cheapest way to change how a room feels.
It adds light, scent, and a little ceremony, all for the price of a lunch.
I light one almost every evening.
But a candle can only cover for a decision, never replace one.
If a room feels flat, the usual cause is structural.
The lighting comes from one source, so every corner looks the same.
