Feedback: Recent Student Developer Pack Changes Have Made It Harder for Students

Hi everyone,

I'm a verified GitHub Student Developer Pack user and a Mechatronics Engineering student from India. First of all, I'd like to thank the GitHub Education team for everything the Student Developer Pack has provided over the years. It has genuinely helped me learn modern software development and build projects that would have been difficult to pursue otherwise.

I wanted to share some feedback regarding the recent changes to the Student Developer Pack and Copilot experience.

Over the past several months, a combination of changes has made it much harder for students to build and learn using GitHub's ecosystem:

GitHub-hosted Claude access is no longer available.
The DigitalOcean Student Pack benefit is no longer included.
Copilot usage limits now feel much easier to exhaust, especially when working on larger educational projects.

I completely understand that AI services and cloud infrastructure have real operating costs, and I appreciate that GitHub has to balance sustainability with providing student benefits. This post isn't meant as criticism—it's simply feedback from a student who has relied heavily on these tools.

Many students today aren't just writing small scripts. We're building full-stack applications, research projects, AI tools, and open-source software. These projects often require longer conversations with Copilot, and it's surprisingly easy to use a large portion of the monthly quota in just a few coding sessions.

As a student from India, I'd also like to mention that AI subscriptions are quite expensive when converted to our local currency. A subscription that may seem affordable in some countries can represent a significant part of a student's monthly pocket money here. Because of that, the GitHub Student Developer Pack has been incredibly valuable for many of us.

I wanted to ask whether GitHub would consider any of the following for verified Student Developer Pack users:

More generous Copilot quotas for verified students.
Additional monthly educational AI credits.
Regional student pricing based on purchasing power.
Exploring partnerships that could restore AI model access or cloud infrastructure benefits similar to what students previously had.

I know GitHub has always been one of the strongest supporters of student developers, and I'm grateful for everything the team has done. I hope this feedback can contribute to future improvements for students around the world.

I think you've highlighted an important point: many students today are using GitHub for much more than small assignments—they're building portfolio projects, contributing to open source, participating in hackathons, and experimenting with AI-powered applications.

One idea that might strike a balance between sustainability and student needs would be to provide additional Copilot credits based on educational activity rather than increasing the quota for everyone. For example, verified students who actively contribute to open-source projects, complete GitHub Skills courses, or maintain a certain level of repository activity could receive bonus monthly credits.

Another possibility would be temporary "boost" credits during events such as hackathons or major academic project periods, when AI usage naturally increases.

Even if unlimited access isn't feasible, offering more flexibility for verified students would help many learners make better use of the Student Developer Pack while keeping the program sustainable.

I appreciate you sharing this feedback, and I hope the GitHub Education team considers these ideas alongside the community's suggestions.

You're absolutely right—I was sharing my perspective as a fellow community member, not on behalf of GitHub or the GitHub Education team. My intention was simply to contribute ideas to the discussion and hopefully spark conversation around possible improvements for students.
