Can we have support for .GIF's for profile display picture (dp)?

Feature Request 🦄 :

Currently, GitHub only supports .png/.jpeg/.jpg as a valid upload format for profile images. Can we expect an update supporting .gif images keeping the limelight on the same? I do understand that adding support for .gif in the list might add extra overhead in terms of both storage and computation performed in compressing and preserving the images in DB, but still, I believe most will consider it as a major feature upgrade in terms of aesthetics.

P.S. : As of now, only markdown supports .gif's & .mp4

UPDATE (10-10-2024): Thanks for the support, everyone! It appears that GitHub now allows the addition of GIFs, although there are some limitations. Instead of displaying a dynamic preview, it simply shows the GIF as a static image, similar to a standard JPG or PNG. It’s 2024, and this long-awaited feature is still not fully functional :(

even gitlab being linked with jira, in jira my animated pfp appears.

I am quite sure after using a gif, it just converts it into a static image. But I may be wrong.

From my own observation, it is possible to upload gif as profile picture, but the gif won't play on browser. I suspect that:

• GitHub extract a single frame out of GIF and stores it instead of taking the whole file
• GitHub saves the gif, but the browser doesn't understand that the picture is GIF and needs to play as URL of image doesn't have the extension.

I think solution would be preserving the extension of image while uploading it and then pass it to url:

My current profile picture is actually the result of GIF uploaded to GitHub.

These are my subjective opinions, so I might be missing something. Please GitHub team, we really would love to see this feature!

EDIT N1:
I downloaded my own profile picture after uploading a gif and if downloaded, it actually comes with the .gif extension but if you open, it shows a single frame (it's just a picture). So, my suspicion of GitHub extracting a single frame was true!
