The end for Cluely is nigh
I first heard about Cluely when a friend texted me a TikTok of Roy Lee using the app on a blind date to lie about his age and job. The woman walked out. I laughed. Then I realized it had millions of views.
That video should have been the peak. Instead, it was the beginning of a perfect case study in how the VC business, hype, and a 21-year-old founder can create something that looks revolutionary for exactly six months before collapsing under its own contradiction.
I’ve covered startups for five years now. I’ve seen dozens of apps promise to revolutionize conversations, hiring, and professional communication. Most disappear quietly. Cluely is different because it’s dying loud, and Roy Lee is telling us exactly why.
The Moment Everything Fell Apart
Last month at TechCrunch Disrupt, Lee said, “Maybe we launched too early. The whole idea was let’s launch something that barely works, and if we can get enough initial users, they will find out the use cases for us.”
In other words, they didn’t have a real product. Instead, they focused on viral marketing. So at least, they could make a name for themselves.
