I think the silence bit is the hardest part. To just STFU for 3 seconds and resist the pressure to rush in gushing the words you've rehearsed. There's this idea that if you could only make your reasoning clear, then surely they would understand...

You have named the hardest part exactly. The instinct to explain harder is the one that does the damage, because the room reads the rush as anxiety rather than clarity. Three seconds feels enormous from the inside and barely registers from the outside.
