What Does a Director Actually Do? The Truth About the Role of a Director
I mean, like a movie Director or TV Series Director, Do you know what I mean right?
People give directors a strange amount of power in their imagination.
If a movie is brilliant, the director is a genius. If it is terrible, the director ruined it. If an actor becomes famous, people sometimes credit the director. If something goes wrong on set, somehow the director must have been responsible. And when people see the words “Directed by” on screen, they often assume that everything they just watched came directly from one person’s brain.
That is not how filmmaking works.
A director is absolutely one of the central creative figures in a production, but a director is not a god, not the owner of everybody on set, not automatically the most technically knowledgeable person in every department, and not always the person with final authority over the finished work.
So what does a director actually do?
At the most basic level, a director takes something that exists on paper, or perhaps only as an idea, and decides how that idea should become something an audience can actually see, hear and feel.
