One ships with React. One ships with 15 years of battle scars. Picking the wrong one will cost you months of regret.

The Hook: My “Provider Hell” Moment

I was three months into my first React job when I realized our app had a problem. Not a bug — something worse. An architecture problem.

We had 12 Context providers wrapping our app. Theme context. Auth context. User context. Cart context. Notification context. Modal context. Each one wrapping the entire component tree. Each one causing re-renders that cascaded through the app like dominoes.

I clicked a button to toggle dark mode. The entire app re-rendered. Not just the theme switcher. Everything. The dashboard. The sidebar. The data tables. All 47 components subscribed to something they didn’t need.

My senior dev looked at the component tree and said one word: “Redux.”

I resisted. Redux was “old.” Redux was “complex.” Redux was what my bootcamp warned me about. But I spent the next two weeks untangling provider nesting, splitting contexts, and manually memoizing every consumer. The “simple” solution had become the expensive one.
