I Am Writing Because I Don’t Want My Thoughts to Die

What You Should Know About Being a Published Author

Every day, thousands of thoughts pass through my mind.

Some stay for a few seconds. Others remain for hours. A few changes the way I see something. For years, I let most of them disappear. An idea would come to me while I was studying, walking, or lying in bed. I would think That’s interesting. I’ll remember it.

Most of the time, I didn’t.

By the next day, the idea was gone. So were the questions, lessons, and small realisations that came with it.

That bothered me. Not because every thought was important or original, but because each one represented a part of who I was at that moment. When I forgot those thoughts, I felt as if I was losing small pieces of myself.

So I decided to write.

Not because I am an expert.

Not because I have all the answers.

Not because I believe my opinions matter more than anyone else’s.

I am writing because I don’t want my thoughts to die.

“The purpose of writing is to enable readers to see what you see, hear what you hear, and feel what you feel.”

— E. L. Doctorow

That idea reflects why I want to write. A thought has little value to me if it disappears without being examined, understood, or shared.

Curiosity Is Both a Gift and a Problem

I have always been curious.

I ask questions about technology, psychology, business, learning, productivity, and life. One question often leads to another, and I can spend hours researching a subject simply because I want to understand it.

The internet gives us access to more information than we could ever consume. But collecting information is not the same as learning.

Learning requires thought.

It requires making connections, examining ideas, and reflecting on what we have found. I have realised that learning is not complete for me until I can explain an idea in my own words.

That is where writing helps.

When I write about something, I have to slow down and decide what I actually understand. I have to separate what I know from what I only think I know.

Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying:

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Writing forces me to test whether I can explain an idea clearly.

If I cannot explain it, perhaps I have more to learn.

Writing Is How I Think

Many people think first and write later.

For me, the process often works differently. I discover what I really think while writing. An unclear idea becomes clearer. A difficult problem becomes easier to examine. A simple question leads to better questions.

Sometimes I begin writing with one idea and finish with another.

That is one of the reasons I enjoy writing. Writing is not only a way to communicate my thoughts. It is also a way to organise them. A blank page gives my thoughts somewhere to go.

The writer Joan Didion expressed a similar idea when she wrote:

“I don’t know what I think until I try to write it down.”

That is one of the best descriptions of my own writing process. I do not always write because I already know what I want to say. Sometimes I write because I want to find out what I think.

This Is a Journey, Not a Destination

I do not expect every article to reach thousands of people. Some articles may reach hundreds. Others may reach only a few readers.

That is fine.

The value of writing is not measured only by views, followers, or reactions. Every article is also a record. It shows what I was learning, what I believed, what I questioned, and what I understood at a particular point in my life.

Years from now, I want to look back at these articles and see how my thinking has changed.

I want to find ideas that I got wrong.

I want to find ideas that remain true.

I want to see which questions led somewhere and which ones led nowhere.

Growth can be difficult to notice from one day to the next. Writing creates a record of that process. Each article becomes another point on the timeline.

What You Will Find Here

This publication is not about pretending to know everything. It is about learning in public. I will write about subjects that genuinely interest me, including:

  • Technology and artificial intelligence
  • Computer science and software
  • Productivity and learning
  • Books and ideas worth exploring
  • Personal development
  • Business and entrepreneurship
  • Mistakes, lessons, and experiments from my own life

Some articles may explain something I have learned. Some may examine a question I am still trying to answer. Others may be an attempt to understand an idea by putting it into words.

I will not always have the final answer. That is part of the point.

Why Share My Thoughts?

I have asked myself this question more than once. Why not keep everything in a private journal?

The answer is simple.

Someone else may be asking the same question. A reader might find one of these articles months or years from now and discover an idea that helps them understand a problem.

Perhaps an article will change someone’s view. Perhaps it will do nothing. Perhaps someone will disagree with everything I write.

That is fine.

Ideas become more useful when they are questioned and challenged. Writing gives those ideas a chance to enter a wider conversation.

For me, sharing thoughts is not about having the final word. It is about starting a conversation.

A Promise to Myself

I do not know where this journey will lead. Perhaps it will lead somewhere I cannot imagine today. Perhaps it will not.

But I know what I want to do.

I do not want my best ideas to exist only inside my head. So, from now on, when an idea is worth keeping, I will give it a place to live.

One article at a time.

If you are reading this, thank you for being here at the beginning. I hope that months or years from now, I can return to these words and see how much my thinking has changed.

Perhaps you will be able to do the same with your own ideas. This is the first page.

Let’s see where the story goes.

George Herbert said:

“Where there is the will, there is the way.”
