Jamie’s mind whirs at a thousand miles per hour

His thoughts layer upon each other, stacked high like pages in a thick novel

Anxiety creeping in, its dark fingers slowly creeping into his mind like an early morning fog

He’d fled the farmhouse with its usual afternoon chaos; it had all been too much

Jamie had slipped into his shoes, and began walking

No destination in mind, just planting one foot in front of the other

Away, away, away.

Down the rutted, red-dirt road with the scraggly weeds growing high in the ditches

Past the farmhouses, and leaning barns that threatened to collapse

Jamie walked past fields dotted with cows, and tall grass

Through the woods, with the trees looming high above his head

Jamie kept walking, trying to get his thoughts in order

He finally slowed when he reached the field.

Here, he felt safe and secure

It was so far from home; quiet and isolated

Far enough from home that he knew he wouldn’t run into his many siblings, or his agitated parents screaming to be heard over their clamour
