In his educational video sessions, Dr. John Watts, a renowned dermatologist, trichologist, and one of Hyderabad’s top hair transplant surgeons, educates viewers about the risks associated with using hair dye and henna on transplanted hair.

Can the chemicals in hair dye and henna affect hair transplant results? When is it safe to use hair color on transplanted hair? Dr. John Watts addresses these questions, having successfully performed over 2000 hair transplant surgeries.

N. Hari Krishna asks: “Sir, I want to know if it is advisable to use hair color or henna on transplanted hair. Can they affect the transplanted hair in any way? Please explain.

Dr Watts advises against using hair dye or henna on transplanted hair, as the chemicals they contain can lead to hair thinning and eventually contribute to baldness over time. In this educational video, Dr Watts elaborates on the adverse effects of these products on transplanted hair.

Responding to N. Hari Krishna’s query, Dr Watts emphasizes that regardless of whether a hair transplant has been performed, it’s generally advisable to avoid using hair dye or henna on the scalp, as prolonged and frequent use can result in hair thinning and a balding appearance.

Using hair dye or henna on transplanted hair introduces several risks and potential hazards that may contribute to hair thinning and affect the overall success of the transplant. Hair dye typically contains harsh chemicals that can cause scalp irritation, inflammation, and allergic reactions besides leading to hair thinning and baldness.

Similarly, while henna is often considered a natural alternative, most commercially available products may contain additives or chemicals that can irritate the scalp and compromise the health of hair follicles. Over time, excessive use of these products can lead to baldness, even in individuals with no family history of hair loss.

In his advisory, Dr Watts told the viewers that it’s best to minimize the frequency of using hair dye or henna. He suggests considering use once every six months to a year as preferable to mitigate potential risks.
