4G LTE Technology and 4G LTE Modems

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a standard for wireless broadband communication for mobile devices and data terminals. It is based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA technologies. It increases the capacity and speed using a different radio interface together with core network improvements. This standard is developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and is specified in its Release 8 document series, with minor enhancements described in Release 9. LTE is the upgrade path for carriers with both GSM/UMTS networks and CDMA2000 networks. The LTE standard has multiple frequencies and bands used in different countries. So in order to use this technology the LTE mobile phones should be multi-band.

4G LTE is one of several competing 4G standards along with Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) and WiMax (IEEE 802.16). The leading cellular providers have started to deploy 4G technologies, with Verizon and AT&T launching 4G LTE networks and Sprint utilizing its new 4G WiMax network. In terms of mobile devices, many newer Android-based smart phones are 4G LTE capable. ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) owns the trade mark “LTE”, however other countries and companies do contribute to LTE project. The goat of LTE project is to increase the capacity and speed of wireless data networks using new techniques like DSP (Digital Signal Processing). And other objective of LTE project is to redesign and simplification of the network architecture to an IP based system. With this there will be significant decrease in the transfer latency compared to that of the 3G architecture. One drawback is that LTE standard is not compatible with 2G and 3G networks. So it has to be operated on separate radio spectrum.

The LTE Standard provides down link peak rates of 300 Mbit/s, uplink peak rates of 75 Mbit/s and QoS provisions permitting a transfer latency of less than 5 ms in the radio access network. LTE has the ability to manage fast-moving mobiles and supports multi-cast and broadcast streams. LTE supports scalable carrier bandwidths, from 1.4 MHz to 20 MHz and supports both frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time-division duplexing (TDD). The IP-based network architecture, called the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) designed to replace the GPRS Core Network, supports seamless handovers for both voice and data to cell towers with older network technology such as GSM, UMTS and CDMA2000
