GraphRAG becomes valuable when ordinary vector RAG starts reducing a rich corpus to a few disconnected snippets. According to Microsoft’s documentation, GraphRAG takes a structured, step-by-step approach: it splits documents into smaller parts, finds entities and their relationships, groups related items, creates summaries for each group, and uses these summaries during retrieval.

The original GraphRAG paper explains that this method performs better for query-focused summarization, especially when answering broad questions about a dataset as a whole. It also reports that GraphRAG is more comprehensive and diverse than regular RAG when working with very large datasets.

However, to get the most out of GraphRAG, you need to tune it carefully. The quality of your prompts shapes the graph, chunking changes what the graph can capture, and clustering impacts how well the data is summarized. The query mode also decides which parts are used to answer questions. If you treat GraphRAG like a basic embedding index, you might end up paying for extra structure you do not actually use.

Why Tuning Matters More in GraphRAG Than in Basic RAG

The main indexing process has several steps: load your documents, split them into chunks, build the graph…
