Why Are More Writers Joining Patreon? Here’s What They Want
I first thought Patreon was mainly for YouTubers, artists, and creators who made videos or other visual content.
Then I started noticing more writers using it.
That made me curious.
Why would a writer ask readers to pay every month when they can publish articles for free on Medium, Substack, their own website, or other platforms?
The answer depends on the writer, but there is one thing they have in common. They want a closer relationship with the people who already enjoy their work.
Some readers want more
A writer may have thousands of people reading their work, but only a small number may want to pay for it.
That is perfectly normal.
Most readers will probably continue reading free posts. A smaller group may want extra articles, early access, private posts, behind-the-scenes notes, or something else that does not appear in the public feed.
Patreon gives writers a place to offer those things.
The important part is that the writer already has something people want to follow.
