Our Story
As I sit here to write this, I struggle to keep it short and sweet. I have waited my whole life for this moment, really. Perhaps I wasn't thinking about the online post I would one day write when I was playing with baby dolls in my room, but I dreamed about becoming a mom.
When Kevin and I reached a point in our lives where we were ready to start trying for kids and stopped all the preventative steps we had always taken, we thought that eventually we would just get pregnant. Only to be met with a period month after month. We have been on this journey for four years, never imagining that it would be so difficult. Multiple tests, blood draws, hormone checks and no one could explain why. I started to lose hope this past year. I started thinking maybe I needed to figure out who Alexsys was without the thought of “mom” being one of my titles. And I spent time with that. I tried to make peace with it.
Then February of this year came, and we had our first loss.
At the end of January, I started what I thought was my period, and it didn't stop. I bled for over 20 days. Oddly enough, it wasn't the first time I had experienced strange symptoms like this. The year before, I had been diagnosed with a small fibroid on my uterus. The doctors didn't seem too concerned and wanted to follow up in six months. For those who don't know what fibroids are, they are growths that can cause a variety of symptoms, including excessive bleeding. So when my period continued far beyond what was normal for me, I called and made an appointment. I had imaging done, and they confirmed that the one fibroid had turned into four. They weren't HUGE, but they weren't small either. This was on day 17 of bleeding. I scheduled a consultation with a surgeon and went home.
Three days later, I woke up and the bleeding had ramped up significantly. The pain was intense, and I felt really dizzy and a little confused. Kevin came home from work, and we went to the ER. The main doctor triaging me seemed to think I was being dramatic and dismissed a lot of my concerns. I was sent home and told to follow up with my OB that Monday.
Monday rolled around, and I was relieved that the bleeding had finally stopped, almost like a water faucet had been turned off. So Kev and I decided to go to the Renaissance Fair, get a little drunk and enjoy ourselves. We love the ren fair. While standing in line for mead, I got a call from that very same ER doctor. Her voice sounded worried and slightly embarrassed. She told me that no one had informed me that my bloodwork had come back with a positive HCG.
I was pregnant.
I was in shock. And let's just say I didn't have any mead that day. 😂
For another 48 hours, we got to believe we were pregnant. We had already started planning how we were going to tell our parents. The end of the first trimester would have lined up with Mother's Day. It was so perfect, I thought to myself.
I made an OB appointment on Monday, and then on Wednesday, I found out through a message in my patient portal that it was a confirmed loss. My HCG had fallen to 8.

I don't know if I've ever felt that kind of pain while also feeling so hopeful. In four years of trying, we had never even had a positive test. But I decided to hang on to the hope. I chose to take it as a sign that it was time to get the surgery and remove these pesky fibroids.
And that's what I did.
On April 30th, I went in for surgery, and they removed all four growths. One of them was even bigger than my uterus itself! Recovery was smooth, but intense. I had never had surgery before, and I am definitely not a fan. But I would do it all over again if I had to. Because not even two cycles after that surgery, on July 18th we got a positive pregnancy test again. 🥰
To say we are in shock is an understatement. I thought it would take so much more time for my hormones to regulate and for my body to cooperate.
But here we are.
We are so incredibly excited for this baby we have waited so long for. So much so that I'm not even waiting until the first trimester is over to share our news. I feel it in my bones that this little one is here to stay.
It has been such a long, complicated, and sometimes defeating road. I have cried countless tears hoping and praying for this baby. I have spent my entire 20s trying to heal from my own childhood so that I can be the mom I have always wanted to be. And now, somehow, I'm getting the chance to become her.
I couldn't be more excited to do this alongside my best friend. Kevin, you are going to be such an amazing father. I am so glad I get to experience this journey with you by my side.
And to the little girl who used to play with baby dolls and dream about being a mom someday… I think she would be pretty proud of us.
After four years of hoping, praying, grieving, healing, and never quite giving up...
We finally get to say, we're having a baby. 🤍
