🧴 The Hidden Chemicals in Everyday Plastics

A new investigation has highlighted a growing concern about the chemicals used in everyday plastic products. The Environmental Justice Foundation’s report, covered by CNN in September 2026, estimates that nearly 93% of known plastic chemicals used in everyday products pose a high health risk.

The concern extends beyond plastic bags and bottles. Food packaging, kitchenware, toys, clothing, personal-care products and medical plastics can all involve chemical additives.

What the report found

Food-contact plastics: almost 92% of the chemicals analyzed were classified as high-risk.

Children’s toys: nearly 89% contained high-risk plastics.

Clothing and textiles: about 93% were associated with dangerous chemicals.

Common household products: more than 92% contained high-risk chemicals.

Hygiene and medical plastics: nearly 93% contained dangerous chemicals.

Some chemicals of concern include bisphenols, phthalates and PFAS. Researchers have associated certain chemicals in these groups with endocrine, reproductive, developmental and other health concerns. However, the presence of a chemical in a product does not automatically mean that using that product will cause illness; actual risk depends on factors such as dose, exposure and the specific chemical.
