The Things We Keep Postponing

“I’ll do it tomorrow.”

Probably one of the most familiar sentences we tell ourselves.

We’ll start that course tomorrow, plan that vacation next month, join the gym when things settle down or finally work on something we’ve been thinking about for ages.

Sometimes, the things we keep postponing aren’t forgotten dreams. They’re things we genuinely want to do, but we’re waiting for the right time, the right resources or the right version of ourselves.

And interestingly, not every delay has the same reason.

Sometimes, it’s perfectionism. We want everything to be just right before we begin. We plan, rethink, make changes and keep preparing. Even a small task starts feeling like a huge responsibility because we’ve already imagined how perfectly it should turn out.

Overthinking adds another layer to it. We spend so much time thinking about how to start, what might go wrong and whether we’re ready that we end up doing very little.

We also overwhelm ourselves by planning too many things at once. We fill our to-do lists with ten different tasks, trying to fit work, fitness, learning, reading and personal interests into an already busy day. Eventually, everything starts feeling like a burden, and instead of completing something, we end up postponing almost everything.

The other case is we simply lack clarity. We want to complete a task, but we’re not sure how to proceed. Instead of asking for help or taking the first step, we keep putting it off.

And then there are things that genuinely depend on our circumstances. We might want to travel, learn MMA or try something new, but financial limitations can make us wait. That’s not always procrastination; sometimes, we simply need the right resources.

Of course, there are also those days when we cancel movie plans because getting ready and stepping outside feels like too much effort. :)

Perhaps one thing we can learn is that not everything needs to be perfect before we begin.

A big task can be broken into smaller ones. Instead of waiting until we have the perfect plan, we can start with whatever is manageable today. One small step can make the next one easier.

We don’t have to fit every dream into the same day, either. Some things need priority, some need patience, and some need preparation.

Maybe the problem isn’t always that we don’t have enough time. Sometimes, it’s the way we think about starting.

We keep waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect circumstances and the perfect version of ourselves.

But life rarely puts everything in place at once.

Perhaps we don’t need to have everything figured out before we begin. Sometimes, beginning is what helps us figure things out.
