How I came to find myself on a path of psychic and mediumship development

This article was originally published in 2019 for a blog website I had started called Becoming The New Intuitive to document my psychic and mediumship development, right before chronic illness set in and put a halt to my writing and deep thinking. That blog is no longer around but I’m reviving these archived articles as an authentic record of that chapter in my unfolding journey. You can find me now at anatomyofhealing.co and on most social media :)

First of all…

I’m not a natural or ‘born’ psychic. (I don’t even consider myself as psychic yet!) (2026 update — now I do!) What’s the deal? After receiving retrenchment from my job at a bank, at the age of 35, I decided to visit a psychic medium to gauge what was to come next for me. The retrenchment came at a good time for me. I had already planned 4 months leave as a sort of sabbatical, to take time away from the busy job and give my head some space to consider what else I might like to do with my life. So I got to make my break with some additional cash in my kitty (it has still been scary as hell though).

I had been without work for 2 months by the time I visited the psychic who first told me I was on this path of intuitive development. Before seeing her the greatest ‘epiphany’ I had had about what direction to take next was that I wanted to ‘do something with my hands’ and ‘spread love’. ‘Ughhhhhh!’, I hear you groan. I know. It sounds so corny. But you’ll come to find I can be a bit corny!

Some background:

So I’m asking myself how much should I tell you? How much background on me and my personal circumstances… Mmmmm… I’m pretty open and I’m going to discuss a wide variety of stuff in this blog so… all of it! But uh, be prepared. I’m all set to be pretty real with you.

Okay.

One: I used to love studying art at high school. In my senior years I wanted to study art and physics — but the class timetables clashed. So the teachers tried to convince me to study physics. I chose art. After high school I tried to get into a specialised university for stage design for theatre, film and TV. But after 3 years of rejections, I went with my logical side and studied Economics instead.

Two: I have a history of depression — since I was 16. Before taking leave of my job via retrenchment I had actually hit my lowest low. It was totally unexpected and much of the months before and after my retrenchment I was also in this deep, hopeless-feeling place so I attended group talk and art therapy classes as part of my treatment/recovery. Man, I loooved returning to my creative side in the art therapy classes. It was really therapeutic for me — not just being creative but, being in a focused — or flow — state that is really calming, expressive, and out of my own head.

1. I loved art class at school 2. Group art therapy was amazing in my depression recovery 3. So… do something with my hands — durr, no brainer!

So Three: ‘doing something with my hands’ was a BIG epiphany for me, a realisation of needing to reengage with my doing side, my physically creating and making side. There is journalistic, if not scientific, work which supports the cognitive and emotional benefits people feel from doing-type activities with their hands i.e. making great food, painting (just a wall, or something more artistic), gardening, building things out of wood and metal.

Do something with my hands. Spread love.

Spreading love? Well now, that’s the corny bit. Those who know me, know I’m the kind of person who will tell them ‘I love you’, ‘you’re special to me’ — and why. I will hug them in public even though they feign discomfort. Well, a lot of us get uncomfortable hearing nice things about ourselves — now isn’t that a pity. When there is likely a consensus that it would be pretty nice if we were each able to be nicer or more real with each other. I think it’s important to express to people how you feel (the good and the uncomfortable) and I think there can never be enough encouraging words shared. An ex who I don’t think too fondly of, but managed to teach me an important life lesson with a note that was attached to a gifted teddy bear: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return” (I just googled and learned this phrase is attributed to Eden Ahbez). Well, I thank him for that lesson (everyone is my teacher). And it applies in so many other ways: just to be honest and receive honest feedback in return. Just to put yourself out there into the universe and receive acceptance from the universe in return. Just to share your true self with others and accept their true expression in return. And on and on.

I’m also the kind of person who has gone out of their way to support and stand up for others. I’ve been bullied — in my younger years — and in my professional working life. I remember when I first started working at the bank I got henpecked by a couple of the women. When they finally approached me about what was bothering them it was because I didn’t say hello to them every morning. I worked in an office of 60 people. I didn’t go and personally greet all 60 of them every day, but when our paths crossed in the course of work or traversing the office, yeah I’d totally say hi and have a chat and thank them for any help. Damn! It took me a while to realise I wasn’t the one with the problem, they were. There was something in them that wanted a greeting every day, to be acknowledged. Well you know, they could have initiated — I would of course return any greetings that came my way and say hi back. Who wouldn’t. I wasn’t the only one who was on their receiving end though. I was 26 when I started at the bank — they were also giving grief to a woman in her late 40s/early 50s. Not. Cool. I started to go out of my way to acknowledge that lady more, deflect their shit from her, include her and show support when she seemed to be being excluded or picked at. And as a couple new staff began to join our team, a more inclusive team dynamic took impetus thankfully changing these two ladies’ power in the team and challenging the fit of their behaviour amongst us all. To me being supportive in this way is spreading love.

Later in my bank life, just before I finished up in that space, I saw two junior staff being bullied by their separate managers. The juniors weren’t ‘good enough’ at their jobs, so they copped attitude, and unrealistic expectations — but no training to improve. Some managers just want staff new to a role to be gung-ho at it from the get-go — man, that’s unrealistic. Or they want other people in the team to train the newbies up for them — err, that’s just a bit self-entitled. I think there’s scope to learn from everyone — and I take great pride in making sure anyone who works with me knows what I expect of them — and that I help them to get there if they aren’t already. The bullying went up the ranks because the senior managers were taking the sides of the managers — because they didn’t really get it. They had all been gurus in their managerial roles for so long they had forgotten what it is like to be at the bottom of a learning curve. So I took it upon myself to remind them of how they could better support these junior staff — and I gave the junior staff some pep talks on the side. The world can seem tough enough without making it tougher on each other. So yeah, to me this is also spreading my love. So, to have reached these epiphanies after the loss of my identity through work — and the lacking clarity and motivation of a depression — well, this was a good start. But maybe still a bit vague for me to move forward with.

So I digress — how did I come to find out I am probably becoming psychic?

I planned on attending a 10 day silent meditation ‘retreat’ (they’re not very retreat-y from what I’ve viewed online but I thought if I could struggle through 10 days of Depression’s mind chatter in silence I could probably figure out how to shut it the hell up. Buut, before the date rolled around I happened to be shopping in the discount book store (because I looove reading!) and came across a book called ‘Heart to Heart’ by Pea Horsley. I have a cat, and at the time was fostering two other cats (yes I know, crazy cat lady) — and man, cats are crazy, independent creatures to live amongst, so I bought this book about communicating with animals. I didn’t realise until I started reading it was telepathic animal communication. Wooah! Cooool. What? The author told amazing true stories of her communications with animals: dogs, cats, horses, snakes, tortoises, whales, flies — you name it — as well as successfully finding (tracking) missing animals. The interactions with the animals were so amazing and the book provided details for the author’s website so I had to look up more. Pea’s website: animalthoughts.com said she was holding an animal communication workshop in Australia — only her second since being in this line of work since 2006. Understanding my temperamental cat/s sounded like such a rewarding outcome so I cancelled the 10 day silent meditation ‘retreat’ and booked the 6 day animal communication workshop instead. I was definitely the newb in the group — the only attendee of circa 30 who hadn’t already dabbled in communicating with animals. Dang was my mind going to be blown by the end! (By the way, it is really draining, doing this energy work. I had headaches and was pretty tired. So lots of water, good eating and self-care is required!)

An exercise in that course led to an exciting synchronicity was where our neighbour holds a bird feather seeks guidance from the animal kingdom to a question we have. The woman who had to respond to my question had outed herself earlier in the course as a soon-to-be professionally practicing psychic so I knew I could ask her a toughie: “what is my soul purpose?”. She told me the message was from a bower bird and the message being to: “open my heart and look inside”. Ugh, cryptic. What does it even mean to look inside your heart? How do you look inside? I spoke to her afterward as I am always collecting little bits of nature (sticks and seed pods and whatnot) and often refer to myself as a bower bird, plus I thought maybe she could expand on the how I could look inside my heart. My neighbour explained that she saw a bowerbird pinning back the skin over my heart with safety pins, and that inside I had a crystal heart. Wow! Still cryptic, but deep. I googled ‘’crystal heart’ trying to find an explanation of the symbolism but there wasn’t much on the web. However, I did come across a crystal store in Melbourne named Crystal Heart. Living in Melbourne at the time I thought I might have to visit this store after the course.

I forgot about the store for a couple of weeks and when I did remember I googled their stones and things, then saw they had psychic and tarot readers etc. I decided to visit the psychic because that all-knowingness blows my mind. Amongst other things the psychic/medium reader told me that I was on my own path of psychic and mediumship development. Whaat!??! How cool, huh!? She also said I will find part time work, study recreationally on the side, and in time host my own art therapy type workshops amongst other small spiritual and artistic business ventures. (After retrenchment from my banking job my plan was indeed to seek only part-time work, reason being I did want to study! I was thinking arty stuff for sure, painting, watercolour, pottery, jewellery making, maybe even ethical taxidermy). Omg. No way. Do something (literally) with my hands and spread love. Seems my intuition was on cue — it just meant something more to me now that it had a bit more backstory.

To receive a glimpse of how all my interests could one day come together — and that they very possibly were destined to come together… I was like, ‘No way! How could everything I love be cobbled together to create a reality in my life!?’ After almost 10 years in a corporate banking job, and hardly enough spare time to think past eating and sleeping in time for the next day at work — I truly couldn’t even fathom the possibility of all this at the time. I still don’t!

So it all started with a workshop on communicating with animals and some seemingly unlikely synchronicities.

It’s pretty out there to most people and I have been blowing a few minds when I share this news. And I do share it because once I read about telling people your goals so you kind of feel held accountable for actioning them. But I’m also an honest Betty — honest probably to a fault, but that’s my jam! I have gotten a few Pfft… Fuck offs from adamant non-believers in my circle — and hey, I’m okay with that. I’m a healthy sceptic and am not really here to push my beliefs on others. But they aren’t going to deter me from sharing aspects of myself either.

So here I am. And here we are. I believe that writing on paper is the best way for our brains to remember and process information. But I suck at writing things down into notebooks — I can’t find that important point I wrote, on that page I can’t find… The order I wrote it down isn’t helpful to my brain… I can’t delete or edit what I wrote and shuffle the paragraphs… How do I organise it my jumble of thoughts…? So I’ve created this blog! It’s going to be my living journal! I’m going to figure out definitions. Write about my experiences: psychic, physical, emotional and otherwise. Share the resources I’ve found. And it will hopefully stay in some semblance of order so that I can focus less on my shitty journaling abilities — and more on my development — of which journaling is an important tool for review.

What can you expect from me? Honesty. Details. An ordinary chick writing about a pursuit less ordinary. Got questions? Head to my contact page, or comment on a blog entry. I’m interested to hear what you think and am keen to learn from you as much as share with you. Stop by any time!

If you dig what I’m dropping, please feel welcome to subscribe, or connect with me in the numerous other places I’m not hiding! I think / talk / dream about all things metaphysical, healing, health, life-death, energy, meaning of life, soul-level astrology, yada, yada, yada. 🙃
