The Strange Magic of Night Skiing
There is a version of skiing most people never try, and it happens after the sun goes down. Night skiing has a completely different atmosphere — quieter slopes, colder air, and floodlights turning the snow into a glowing, almost surreal landscape. It feels less like a sport and more like stepping into a winter dream.
The darkness changes how you ski. Without the usual visual clutter of a busy day, your senses sharpen. You feel the snow under your feet more clearly, hear the soft hiss of your edges carving, and notice how still the mountain becomes once the crowds leave. There is a calmness to it that daytime runs simply cannot offer.

Night sessions also demand a little more from your gear. Temperatures drop fast after sunset, and wind cuts harder when the sun is gone. You want layers that block the chill without making you sweat on the way up. My Capelin jacket has been my go-to for these evening runs — warm enough for the cold, light enough to keep moving freely.
Next time you are at a resort, stay for one night session. The mountain after dark might just become your favourite part of the season.
