In, Out and All About: The Latest On AI-500, SC-500 and SC-730
There’s A Whole Lot Going On
Microsoft’s certification ecosystem is shifting rapidly toward AI governance, agentic systems, and end-to-end cloud protection. Having navigated these exam tracks firsthand, here is my takeaway on three major updates and what they mean for your career roadmap.
1. In: AI-500 Hits Beta
The AI-500 (Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert) is officially live in beta. Designed for expert-level practitioners, this exam validates your ability to architect, deploy, and govern multi-agent workflows using Microsoft Foundry.
There was a very big disconnect here: the AI-500 study guide, exam page and e-course were released July 17, 2026. The exam wasn’t accepting registrations until Wednesday, July 22, 2026. In my 5 years of taking Microsoft beta exams, that was a first. I did think that the delay derived from the SC-730 debacle (More about that down the page).

Microsoft also informed us this Wednesday that AI-103 is the perequisite for sitting for the AI-500. If you have the AI-102, you must pass the AI-103 in order to obtain the expert badge.
2. Out: SC-500 Exits Beta to General Availability
The SC-500 (Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate) has officially graduated out of beta into general availability. Having taken the beta — battling through 58 questions and two dense case studies down to the final four minutes — I can attest that this exam thoroughly tests real-world identity, data, and compute protection across AI workloads.
The SC-500 will replace the AZ-500 on September 1, 2026. The SC-500 is one of three SC-100 Cybersecurity Architect Expert perequisites. SC-200 Security Operations Analyst and SC-300 IAM Administrator Associate are the other two exams.
I will keep everyone posted because someone commented on Reddit that this past Thursday they took and received their results (they passed).
3. All About: SC-730 Restored & All About the Business Mindset
The SC-730 (Cybersecurity Business Professional) exam is fully restored. I wrote about all of the most recent twists and turns regarding this dead certification (Microsoft killed it during the beta phase so it never achieved general availability). This week Microsoft has restored the exam and score reports in PearsonVUE.
Boy, I tell you: the dead certification is more intriguing than the live ones.
The Takeaway
Whether you are orchestrating agents with AI-500 or securing cloud infrastructure with SC-500, these credentials reflect where tech leadership is headed.
