HR Tech: Not every tool is built to last.

HR Tools That Actually Deliver

We’re being sold a lot of shiny promises right now: “AI that transforms hiring overnight,” “platforms that run themselves,” and “seamless solutions” that somehow still require three logins, ten workflows, and a Slack channel to troubleshoot.

Sound familiar?

If you’ve ever sat through a slick demo, bought into the buzz, and then watched your team abandon the tool a month later… you’re not alone.

The market is flooded with vendors who can talk the talk but disappear the second you hit implementation. It’s no wonder leaders are exhausted — not from the work itself, but from the noise surrounding it.

Vendor fatigue is real.

Hiring burnout is real.

And the avalanche of “AI-powered” products promising to solve everything with zero lift? That’s not strategy. That’s distraction.

But the shift I’m seeing from the most forward-thinking teams is they’re moving from defaulting to new… to doubling down on useful.

They’re asking better questions:

  • Will this tool reduce actual friction for my team?
  • Does it integrate where we already work?
  • Can it flex as we grow or will we outgrow it in six months?

They’re pressure-testing features against real world workflows, not product tours. They’re leaning into AI, but not blindly. They’re vetting it. Governing it. And rolling it out in ways that enhance human decision making, not replace it.

And most importantly? They’re not chasing “effortless.” They’re building adaptable.

In this issue, I’m unpacking what that looks like in practice:

  1. How AI will help you work smarter, if you implement it intentionally
  2. What an AI-proof, human-centred candidate experience really takes
  3. What the rise of AI agents means for your org chart (hint: everyone’s a boss now)

Let’s dive in.

HR + AI: Transformation, Not Replacement

SHRM data shows that 1 in 4 orgs are already using AI to support HR tasks, and nearly half of HR leaders say it’s become a bigger priority in the past year.

But here’s the catch: AI won’t magically fix broken hiring processes. And it won’t do your job for you.

What it will do is help you work smarter, if you implement it intentionally.

🔍 Key takeaways from SHRM:

  • AI is most widely adopted in large orgs and industries like tech and finance
  • HR teams using AI are seeing benefits in productivity, collaboration, and innovation
  • But 70% report challenges: privacy concerns, lack of internal expertise, and fear of losing the human touch

As Nichol Bradford (SHRM’s Executive-in-Residence for AI+HI) puts it: “AI will not identify the opportunities to reinvent your value chain… Your people will do that.”

✅ What HR leaders can do now:

  • Frame AI as an enabler, not a replacer.
  • Invest in upskilling your people alongside tech adoption.
  • Assign AI ownership within HR, ideally inside HRIT, to guide strategic, compliant use.

At Certn, we believe AI and automation should take the tedious off your plate, so you can focus on building better teams, faster. Our AI-powered tools are designed for transparency, compliance, and speed with substance.

The Candidate Experience AI Can’t Replace

Trust is built in seconds, and lost just as fast. That’s why our screening tools are post-offer and candidate-initiated. At Certn, we’re building AI that supports better hiring, without losing what’s human about it.

Yes, AI is screening résumés and writing job descriptions, but AI can’t replace a human hiring experience; it makes human intelligence even more essential.

I don’t think it’ll be a zero-sum game. Some roles will shrink, but others will evolve. The biggest shift? Rethinking roles as skill sets, not static tasks.

📌 Best practice moves HR leaders are making now:

  • Using AI to augment tasks, like résumé parsing or interview scheduling, not replace decision making.
  • Keeping managers involved in feedback, goal setting, and performance reviews. Let AI support, not script, them.
  • Building in checkpoints: Regularly auditing tools, gathering candidate feedback, and doubling down on what makes the process a standout experience.

Future of Work Alert: Microsoft Says Everyone Will Be a Boss in the Age of AI

Microsoft’s latest move into autonomous AI agents isn’t just another tech headline, it’s a wake-up call for HR leaders rethinking how teams operate, scale, and stay relevant.

Microsoft calls it their “Agent Factory,” and it’s part of a broader shift to make every employee a decision-maker by offloading routine work to AI. They’ve even built a new tool — Tenant Copilot — that adapts to your org’s workflows like a digital twin.

So what’s this mean for HR?

✅ AI is changing job architecture, not just job titles
✅ Strategic upskilling is no longer optional, it’s a survival skill
✅ The future of leadership is distributed, where everyone leads something, and “manager” becomes a mindset, not a title

HR’s next frontier isn’t just hiring faster. It’s building orgs that can thrive alongside AI, where humans lead with creativity, and automation handles the heavy lift.

In a market flooded with gimmicks, speed traps, and AI buzzwords, the real HR edge is practical fluency and operational curiosity. Many leaders buy the Ferrari, but never teach the team to drive it.

Adoption is everything. If you’re not training, enabling, and refreshing tooling habits regularly, even the flashiest tech becomes shelfware.

I sat down with Martin Hauck, co-founder of Purple Umbrella and community builder behind The People People Group, for a spicy episode of 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘛𝘌? and to get his take on how HR leaders are vetting tech and building AI fluency.
