How to Build a Truly Happy Marriage

What’s the real point of getting married, anyway?

First off, it’s definitely not about dragging each other down. It’s about having someone in your corner who genuinely cheers you on through all the ordinary days. Second, when life throws you curveballs, you’ve got an equal partner to hash things out with and face things together. And finally, life is just too damn long to go through it alone. You need that one person who truly gets you, who keeps the loneliness at bay.

People ask us all the time — how do you actually make marriage work? Is there some secret formula?

But here’s the thing: techniques and tricks are just icing on the cake. They’re not magic bullets. Take this example. One husband surprises his wife with a carefully chosen gift. She lights up and gives him a kiss. Another husband does the exact same thing, and his wife hits him with, “Why are you wasting money again?”

Sure, the complaining wife is in the wrong. She didn’t acknowledge his effort. But the husband made a mistake too: he didn’t understand what his wife actually needed. The gift was what he wanted to give, not what she wanted to receive. Maybe what she really needed was him pitching in with housework…
