No Human Will Ever Write Code Better Than LLMs? Better at What?

AI can generate code faster than most developers can type it. But speed, correctness, architecture, security, and maintainability are different measures of good software.

I keep seeing variations of the same prediction:

No human will ever write code better than an LLM.

It sounds convincing when you watch an AI coding agent build an application, fix bugs, generate tests, and refactor hundreds of lines of code in minutes.

A developer might spend an afternoon implementing something that an AI assistant produces in seconds.

But there is one question missing from that argument:

Better at what?

Writing code quickly is one skill. Understanding a complicated system is another. Producing software that remains secure, maintainable, and reliable for years is an entirely different challenge.

An LLM can generate impressive code. It can even outperform many developers on specific programming tasks.

But that does not automatically make it a better software engineer.
