“Closures are one of those JavaScript concepts that seem confusing at first, then suddenly start appearing everywhere.”

Earlier in this series, we briefly discussed closures while learning about scope and functions. At the time, the idea was simple: a function can remember variables from the place where it was created, even after that outer function has finished executing.

For many beginners, that explanation feels a little magical.

How can a variable continue to exist after the function that created it is gone?

Why doesn’t JavaScript clean it up?

And perhaps most importantly, why should we care?

The answer is that closures are not just an interesting language feature. They are one of the most powerful tools in JavaScript. Once you move beyond tutorials and start building real applications, you’ll discover that closures quietly power many patterns you use every day.

In fact, some of JavaScript’s most useful capabilities would be impossible without them.

Today we’re going beyond the theory and exploring how closures solve real-world problems.
