5 Ways Senior Engineers Use AI Without Losing Their Edge
The best engineers are not avoiding AI. They are learning which work to automate without outsourcing the judgment that made them senior.

A senior engineer gives an AI coding agent a production bug. The agent reads the repository, finds the relevant service, traces the query, proposes a fix, adds a regression test, runs the suite, and explains what changed.
The patch works.
A few days later, the same thing happens with another problem. Then again the following week. The engineer is clearly getting more done. Bugs disappear sooner, unfamiliar codebases take less time to navigate, and tedious implementation work no longer consumes half the day.
There is nothing obviously wrong with this.
The interesting part begins much later, when the engineer notices how little time they now spend forming hypotheses before seeing an answer. They trace fewer execution paths manually. They encounter fewer wrong turns. They spend less time discovering that their first explanation of a system was incomplete.
Those activities were inefficient in one sense, but they were also part of how engineering judgment stayed calibrated.
