On the subject of finding a mentor: I had several writer friends when I was in my 20’s. But there was no guidance from them. I was writing a lot of poetry at the time, and one traditionally published author (who was famous) said I was delusional to imagine I could make a living writing poetry. I remember it clearly because it was unkind, and I had not thought I could make a living with it. I just enjoyed it. I also did not solicit his advice. Sometimes the people we admire squash our dreams intentionally. I think after that, I stopped writing poetry and stories… for awhile, I just put it aside. I kept a journal. But began to focus more on visual art. Who knows if he had given me kinder advice, I might have developed my writing much sooner.
