Why Did the Smithsonian Erase the 1909 Grand Canyon Underground City After Naming the Cliffs After Egyptian Gods

Why would 19th century federal surveyors name an entire sector of the American Southwest after the gods and pharaohs of ancient Egypt?

According to the newspaper report, an explorer named G. E. Kinkaid and Professor S. A. Jordan, working under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, discovered a massive man made underground citadel carved 1,480 feet up the sheer rock wall above the Colorado River. Inside the central mammoth chamber, passages radiated out like the spokes of a wheel into hundreds of rooms engineered to house 50,000 people. The team recovered copper weapons, stone tablets covered in hieroglyphics, and mummified remains sitting inside the vaults.
Days after the newspaper story ran, the entire trail was wiped clean. The Smithsonian Institution stepped in, announced to the press that it had zero record of Kinkaid or Jordan ever existing, and scrubbed its registries. Shortly after, the federal government declared those exact canyon sectors off limits to the public, welded heavy iron grates across the cave entrances, and passed federal rules making archaeological coordinates legally exempt from public information requests.
Today, more than 115 years later, armed rangers still patrol those closed sectors, commercial drones are banned from flying near the cliffs, and any hiker caught climbing toward the caves Under Isis Temple faces federal arrest.
