A lump or swelling that persists should be checked. So should unexplained bleeding, blood in the stool or urine, a cough or hoarseness that lasts for weeks, difficulty swallowing, or a lasting change in bowel habits. Unexplained weight loss, unusual tiredness, persistent pain, or a sore that does not heal can also require medical evaluation. Changes in a mole — such as its size, shape, or color — should not be ignored. These symptoms do not automatically mean cancer. In fact, many are caused by common, noncancerous conditions. The important issue is persistence or an unusual change from what is normal for you.
Cancer is often easier to treat when found early. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before discussing a persistent or concerning change with your doctor.
