Soothsayers and The Resident Spirit
*
Elders are supposed to be in touch with what is meaningful, enduring and authentic in life. They may forget someone’s name, but should not forget that each has a purpose and a meaning. They may suffer short-term memory loss, but only to recall the things of eternity. Aging involves an opportunity for the concentration of attention on essential things.
Failing eyesight dims the outer world and its passing glories, but this is not a complete loss when balanced by an increase of inner vision. An elder uses old eyes to see what those with fresh eyes typically overlook. In losing sight of outward things, the vision of elders tends toward things internal and things eternal. Many things fade, but certain things clarify. An old proverb states that: “What the elders see while sitting others can’t see while standing on their toes.
As an inner resident of the soul and keeper of one’s life-dream, the daimon knows best which way we should turn when we find ourselves at a crossroads in life.
When we respond to intuitions and hunches, the inner spirit acts like a resident oracle speaking from within at crucial moments.
In crucial moments the inner spirit or muse of the soul will offer its guidance, but we must first learn to hear its language.
