How to Fix Printer Canon E410 in Ubuntu 26.04 : Sunday Morning Fix
Yesterday on Sunday morning, my daughter came up to me holding her tablet with excited emotion. She wanted to print some printable template designs for creating DIY squishies. You know, soft, squeezable viral toys that many kids obsessed. She needed to print the paper, cut, fold and fill it with the dacron.
I agreed to help, when I go to my laptop which placed closest with the printer, the printer didn’t work correctly. another issue is because this laptop only installed with Ubuntu 26.04 operating system.
Some years ago, when I was running with the older versions of ubuntu or even Linux Mint, the setup is very simple just plug the usb and voila it can be printed, or I think I also need to install the driver from Canon manufacture, but now with the newest operating system it won’t work, the current driver can’t be installed anymore since the dependency is no more exist.
When I plugged in our Canon PIXMA E410, Ubuntu automatically recognized the device via USB, When we tried to print, CUPS reported the job as "Completed," but the printer completely dead silent. Changing to random built-in MG-series drivers only resulted in the printer queue throwing a Stopped error.
If you are facing the exact same issue on Ubuntu 26.04 (or recent Debian-based distros), here is how to fix it step-by-step.

Step 1: Install Required Dependencies and Gutenprint Drivers
Modern Ubuntu releases no longer ship with legacy Canon drivers out of the box. Open your terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install printer-driver-gutenprint cups-filters -yStep 2: Ensure User Group Permissions
Make sure your local user account has permission to handle print spools and administration (the group is lp and lpadmin) not sure it is needed or not haha, it was coming from AI, but let’s just try it:
sudo usermod -aG lp,lpadmin $USERStep 3 and sub step: Reconfigure the Printer via CUPS Web Interface
I use browser to setup the printer, another way, we can do the same from the control panel, the most important thing is just choosing the right PPD
- Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:631
- Go to the Printers tab and select your existing E410-series.
- Under the Administration drop-down menu, click Delete Printer to clear out the misconfigured printer entry. ( if the system ask the username and password, you can fill it with your sudoer account)
- Go to the top Administration tab and click Add Printer.
- Select Canon E410 series (USB) under Local Printers and click Continue.
- When prompted to select the Driver/Model: Canon PIXMA E400 CUPS+Gutenprint (or from AI also suggested MG2500 because the hardware architecture is identical to the E410). if we use default driver from canon we can’t find the PPD E410 / E400 / MG2500 that’s why it the driver won’t work.
- Save the options by clicking Add Printer / Set Default Options.
Step 4: Resume Print Queue
If your printer status was previously stuck on Stopped, force-enable the queue in your terminal:
sudo cupsenable E410-series && sudo cupsaccept E410-seriesFinally the printer head started moving and the design has been printed successfully.
Hope this quick guide saves you some troubleshooting time if you’re keeping older hardware running smoothly on modern Linux builds. Ultimately, it saved our Sunday morning, and my daughter got to spend the rest of the day happily crafting her DIY squishies. Happy Holiday!!!
