Why Do We Look at Our When We’re Already Bored of Our Phones?

4 min readSep 28, 2026

You know that feeling when you are sitting on the sofa. The podcast is on but you are not watching it. You’ve already scrolled through Instagram twice. You have checked WhatsApp. You have refreshed Twitter even though nothing new is there. You are bored. You know you are bored. Yet you unlock the screen again. Why?

This is not just you. This is everyone. Your mother does it. Your elder sister does it. Even your father who used to hate technology does it. We are all trapped in the same loop. And the worst part is, we know it is a loop. We just cannot stop.

Here’s a fun fact about your brain.
It does not actually want you to be happy. It wants you to survive. And survival means hunting for rewards. When you pick up your phone, your brain releases a chemical called dopamine. Most people think dopamine is the pleasure chemical. It is not. It is the Hope chemical. It is the “maybe something good is about to happen” chemical.

Have you ever been to a casino? Probably not. But you have seen them in movies. People sit at slot machines for hours. They pull the lever. Nothing. They pull again. Nothing. They pull again. Jackpot. Then they keep pulling because maybe it will happen again.

Your phone works the same way. When you open TikTok, you do not know what you will see. A funny video? A cute cat? Something that makes you angry? Something that makes you laugh? You do not know. That is the point.

The unpredictability keeps you coming back. If every video was the same, you would stop watching. But because you never know what is next, you keep scrolling. You are pulling the lever. You are just doing it with your thumb.

Boredom is uncomfortable.

It is like an itch you cannot scratch. Your brain hates it. It wants stimulation. It wants something to do. It remembers that your phone has given it stimulation before. So it tells you to check it. Maybe this time it will be different. Maybe this time you will find something that actually makes you feel good.

So you check. And what do you find? The same memes. The same arguments. The same people posting the same things. You feel nothing. You put the phone down. Two minutes later, the itch is back. You pick it up again. This is the boredom trap. You are not enjoying it. You are just trying to escape the discomfort of having nothing to do.

Your mother calls you for dinner. You say “coming” but you do not move. You are finishing one last scroll. One more video. One more message. Your food gets cold. Your family waits.

This happens every night in every house. We are so busy connecting with strangers online that we ignore the people sitting right next to us.

Imagine you’ve little sister. She is 5 years old. She wants to show you a drawing she made. But you are on your phone. You nod without looking. She walks away. She learns that the phone is more important than her. That is the real cost of this habit. It is not just wasted time. It is missing moments.

Have you ever been in a waiting room? Look around. Everyone is on their phone. Nobody is talking. Nobody is looking at each other. It is like we are all in our own little worlds. If you are the only one not on your phone, you feel weird. You feel exposed. So you pull out your phone too. Not because you want to. Because everyone else is doing it.

This is how habits spread. We see other people doing something. We copy them. We do not even question it. Your father did not grow up with smartphones. But now he even checks his phone during family dinners. It is not because he is addicted. It is because everyone else is doing it. And he does not want to feel left out.

The first step is to understand that your phone is designed to be addictive. It is not your fault. It is their intention. They want you to keep scrolling. They make money from your attention. Once you understand this, you can start to fight back.

Create some friction. Put your phone in another room when you are with your family. Turn off notifications. Delete the apps that waste the most time. Make it harder to check your phone without thinking. Embrace boredom.

Boredom is not the enemy. It is a gateway to creativity. When you are bored, your brain starts to wander. It starts to think. It starts to dream. Some of the best ideas come from moments of boredom. But we never give ourselves those moments anymore.

We look at our phones when we are bored of them because our brains are wired to seek rewards, and our phones are designed to exploit that wiring. Dopamine drives us to check for unpredictable rewards. Infinite scroll removes stopping points. Notifications keep us on edge. Boredom feels unbearable because we have lost the ability to sit with it.

But we can change. It starts with awareness. It starts with putting the phone down and looking at the people around us. Your family is right there. Your life is right there. Do not miss it for a screen that will never love you back.
