Why the Fundamentals of Java Still Catch Me Off Guard After 10 Years
“A decade of coding in Java, and I still stumble over equality checks, nulls, and the same old pitfalls. Here’s a candid look at the fundamentals that never stop humbling me.”
You’d think after a decade of writing Java code, building enterprise applications, and debugging endless stack traces, I’d have mastered the language fundamentals. But the truth is — some basics of Java still manage to trip me up. And I know I’m not alone.
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been around as long as I have, certain “gotchas” of Java have a way of humbling even the most experienced developers. Let me walk you through the ones that still catch me off guard.
1. The Equality Trap (== vs .equals())
Ah yes, the classic. Comparing two strings in Java.
String a = new String("hello");
String b = new String("hello");
System.out.println(a == b); // false
System.out.println(a.equals(b)); // trueEven after 10 years, my muscle memory sometimes types == when I mean .equals(). And when dealing with objects, it’s even trickier—especially when you throw in Objects.equals() or compareTo().
👉 Lesson learned: Always ask myself, “Am I comparing references or values?”
