The New Roles of HR: Beyond Administration

Today, HR is no longer just an administrative function. In many companies, HR stands next to the leadership team, shaping key decisions and helping design the future of the organization.

To me, HR should play several core roles — roles that not only support the business, but actually drive growth and change.

1. Strategic Partner 🤝

HR needs to deeply understand where the company wants to go and translate that into real programs — whether in leadership development, hiring, talent management, or organizational design.

This means HR shouldn’t just solve day-to-day issues. It should proactively build systems and policies that are aligned with the company’s strategy and help the organization win.

2. Leadership-Driven 👥

HR must work with managers, not separate from them. Employee experience is a shared responsibility between leaders and HR.

HR’s role is to teach managers how to:
— hire the right people
— keep teams motivated
— improve individual and team performance

A strong HR team strengthens leadership across the organization.

3. Human-Centered ❤️

A good HR function helps create a workplace where:

  • People’s growth and wellbeing matter.
  • Power is distributed fairly and transparently.
  • Learning and collaboration replace unhealthy competition.
  • Workflows are simple and free from unnecessary complexity.
  • Respect, empathy, and diversity lead to creativity.

The workplace becomes more human — and more effective.

4. Efficiency & Business Thinking 💡

HR should think like a business unit and care about return on investment.

This looks like:

  • Designing compensation wisely and monitoring productivity
  • Cutting ineffective costs and choosing smarter solutions
  • Using technology and self-service to speed up processes
  • Collaborating with teams like Finance and Marketing to improve end-to-end efficiency

Many parts of this perspective are inspired by my experiences and Dave Ulrich’s famous piece that redefined the role of HR:
