Zed’s Latest Update Integrates a Great Feature from IDEA
Anyone who writes code in VS Code has experienced this kind of torture:
The terminal throws an error and prints a long file path. You instantly spot the offending file name, drag to select the text, and then you have to go through a tedious sequence of steps just to locate the file.
In JetBrains IDEs, this operation is smooth and seamless: select the file name, press double Shift to bring up the search popup, the search box is automatically filled with the selected text, and you instantly jump to the target file - all done with a single shortcut from start to finish.
Switch to the old version of Zed or VS Code, and the experience immediately becomes more cumbersome.
After selecting the file name, you have to copy it first, open the file search box, and then paste it.
Those few extra copy-and-paste steps may not count as a fatal bug, but they are a classic example of needless suffering. These tiny operational frictions accumulate day by day, gradually wearing away your coding flow.
The new version of Zed is designed specifically to solve this pain point and align with JetBrains' classic interaction.
Let's take a look at how to use it.
First, press Ctrl+, to open the settings and select "prefill query."
