Marxist theory
The story that I picked is “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka because I read this book in my senior year of high school. It is about a man named Gregor who turns into a bug. He is trying to fit in today’s society with his new appearance. The theory that I picked for this book is the Marxist theory. One of the connections between the Marxist theory and “Metamorphosis” is the production of the whole book. Franz Kafka has his own beliefs of this theory. He uses it through the characters in the book. Gregor represents Franz Kafka, like being distant from their families. Like the different types of classes that he is describing. From working class to middle class. When it comes to the working class, many people bust their behinds off to put food on the table, clothes on their backs, a roof over their heads, and pay the bills. There are many working-class workers in the book, they have to bring a lot of effort in order to make it through. While the middle class does not have to worry because they live on salaries, even though that they do not have any assets. Both Gregor’s family and himself are working class because Gregor works for the real estate company. While Gregor’s boss is middle class because he owns the real estate company. Even though he works, Gregor is not happy. It also involves alienation because of Gregor’s transformation. His transformation symbolizes both his life and society. The effect of Marxism is people’s thoughts that are very deep. Gregor wants to help his family, but it turns out that they do not need his help. He sacrifices his life to help provide for his family. Whether he is working or not, his family did not care. His sister has the role of leadership. He sadly dies from a broken heart. That is the main aspect of the story. The advantages of the psychoanalytic theory are exploring the impact on Gregor’s class socially and analyzing the currents between his family and himself. The disadvantages are certain ideas. Like if Gregor keeps providing for his family, then he will feel appreciated that he is helping them, but he was wrong. Franz Kafka went into detail very carefully and he knew that he should go into detail about Gregor’s transformation.
