Students at the American University in Bulgaria are currently facing a rise in educational costs. As tuition and related fees continue to increase, concerns about affordability and access to higher education start to rise. While the university administration says the increase reflects inflation and institutional development, many students and families say the financial pressure is becoming harder to manage.

For current and potential students there is a sense that tuition increases feed into decisions about whether a student can afford to attend a particular institution‚ or whether that particular dream is still something that they can pursue․

According to official information published by the American University in Bulgaria, the tuition fees for the undergraduate degree programs for the 2025–2026 academic year were announced to be around $13‚300 per semester․ This is about 6% higher than the tuition fee for 2024–2025‚ which was around $12‚500 per semester․

University administrators argue that these increases are necessary to maintain the quality of education and the international reputation of the institution. “Maintaining a high-quality American-style education requires significant resources,” said a representative from the university’s financial administration. “Tuition adjustments are carefully considered to ensure the university can continue providing strong academic programs and support services.”

However‚ financial changes the rise brings can make an immediate difference for current and potential students․

Tesi Cela, a current sophomore student studying economics, says her family is forced to consider their financial plans because of the cost rise. “My parents support my education, but every increase makes things more stressful,” she said. “We already rely on financial aid, and even small changes in tuition can make a big difference.”

Like many students at AUBG, Cela receives partial financial assistance from the university. Financial aid packages at the institution typically include scholarships, grants, and family contributions based on the student’s financial background. Still, students say the remaining costs such as housing, food, travel, and textbooks can quickly add up.

Parents who finance their children’s education also feel the pressure. For families sending students from abroad, the total cost of studying at the American University in Bulgaria often includes international travel expenses and currency exchange fluctuations.

“My daughter is very happy studying here, but we have to plan everything very carefully,” said Anila Mella, an Albanian mother whose child is a second-year student. “Education is an investment, but every increase means more financial adjustments for our family.”

University officials have stated that they are committed to financial aid and making the school accessible for students of all backgrounds․ According to university materials, a large percentage of students receive some form of financial support.

Still, some students worry that higher tuition could discourage future applicants. As an international university that promotes diversity, AUBG attracts students from dozens of countries. Rising costs could make the institution less accessible to prospective students from lower-income backgrounds.

Other experts have noted that the issue faced is not unique to the university‚ and that similar trends exist at other universities across the globe․ Higher education scholar Philip Altbach has noted that “Rising costs are a global reality in higher education‚ driven by expansion‚ technology‚ and the demand for quality․”

However‚ students say there should be transparency in financial decisions that affect the entire campus community․

“Students understand that costs increase, but it’s important for the administration to communicate clearly why these changes are happening and how they affect students.” added political science student Mateo Dyrmishi.

Tuition has also been discussed in the context of the future of higher education more generally‚ where universities seek to balance academic excellence with providing education to a diverse population․

For many students, the issue is not only about the current tuition increase but about what it might mean for the future.

“If tuition keeps rising every year, it might become harder for some students to stay here,” Cela said. “AUBG offers great opportunities, and it would be a shame if fewer people could afford them.”
