Why I decided to study Cloud computing/ Dev Ops.
As we entered the third quarter of 2023, I realized I hadn’t met the learning goal I had set for myself this year. It wasn’t an easy choice; should I finally commit to creating a website and uploading my Data science projects or learn something new?
A bit about myself, I have degrees in Statistics, Business administration and Data Science and I currently work as a DNM waste water Remote monitoring Controller where I analyse trends in data to triage alarms and allocate company resources. The science behind DNM (Dynamic network monitoring) involves using different types of sensors (assets) installed in manholes to record data, which is then trained to create a machine learning model which predicts what normal sewer levels should be under various conditions. In other words, anomaly detection and predictive analysis (the data scientist/ Statistician in me weeps that my job doesn’t involve this).
Working at UU made me curious as to how the platform we use works. How do the assets alert? During my postgraduate studies, I had no reason to look at at cloud computing (shocking! I know), but now I get to see and work with a product that incorporates AI in a fascinating way. My interest was piqued.

So voila! Since I already roughly understood the data science and ML bit, the clous was left.
The next step was choosing the cloud platform to focus on among the big three. Amazon (AWS), Microsoft (Azure), or Google (GCP)? I chose Azure for several reasons
1. Microsoft is well,… Microsoft.
2. Cost. Azure portal gives you 12 months free trial. With the cost of living, I’ve got kids and bills mates! I’ss save money where I can.
3. Certifications. Microsoft offers tons of free learning. Also, if you know ehre to look, lots of discount vouchers for their exams.
4. I decided on starting my journey with a bootcamp offered by Utiva.io and they use Azure.
Now I am aware of the AWS is “King” debate. I don’t live in the US. In the UK Azure is widely used.
