What Is A Narcissist & How Can We Help Them? 6 Signs To Watch For & The Best Evidence-Based Treatments In 2026

--

Normally, I like to start these conversations with a little joke to lighten the mood, but today we need to do something different.

As usual, I was tempted to use a little light humour about narcissism to break the ice, but the truth is that’s not a helpful thing to do here.

Instead I want to tell you that narcissists are often looked down on as bad people, but that’s an oversimplification that really isn’t quite true.

A true narcissist is suffering from a mental health condition, not a lack of moral fiber, and we should be trying to help them rather than belittle them.

I know that’s a less popular idea than simply thinking of them as morally bankrupt… but we’re here to work on solutions, not to intensify the problem.

Now that’s not to say that every narcissist is suffering from NPD, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but between 0.5% and 5% of folks globally suffer from NPD as an actual health condition.

The only way to truly tell the difference between narcissism as a personality trait, or as a disorder, is by speaking to a qualified professional about a diagnosis.

Before you do that though, it helps to know what you’re looking for, and how to recognize it.

To do that, it’s recommended that you look for these 6 common signs of narcissism — although there are actually 12 common signs to watch for, I’ve condensed this list slightly.

1. Inflated Sense Of Entitlement

Perhaps the most obvious sign of narcissism is the overblown sense of entitlement, which leads these folks to believe that they are superior to others and deserve special treatment.

This belief leads many people to think that their needs should be met without question, even while others have to go without.

2. Admiration & Attention Seeking

While narcissists tend to believe that they’re superior already, they also often need to have that belief confirmed by others.

Although it’s normal for people to want admiration and attention, a narcissist will seek these things at the expense of others, even when they don’t deserve it.

3. No Care For Others’ Feelings

A lack of empathy is a big flashing warning sign, though it can sometimes be hard to recognize without professional help.

This lack often shows up in other harmful behaviors such as manipulation, blaming victims, not listening to others, or refusing to offer real forgiveness.

4. Sensitive Self-Esteem

You might think that since narcissists are already sure they’re superior, that their self-esteem should be rock-solid… but this is rarely the case.

Most often their inflated self-esteem relies on external validation, and they can easily become hurt, upset, or even angry if they’re not given this validation.

If someone can’t handle rejection, failure, or criticism without lashing out, that’s a warning sign to watch for.

5. Arrogance, One-Upmanship & Alienation

Nobody likes a show-off, but someone suffering from NPD often can’t help trying to one-up the people around them.

They instinctively believe that they either are the best already, or could be if they were just given the chance, and this can alienate the people around them.

Unfortunately this can be self-reinforcing, because a narcissist may believe that people are avoiding them because they’re so great, not because they’re so arrogant.

6. The Circle Of Envy

Last in our list, the circle of envy is a common issue where narcissists will envy those they see as more successful, while also believing anyone less successful must envy them.

It doesn’t track in their minds that we can just be happy for each other’s success.

This can lead to some folks becoming incredibly competitive, even in areas where we really don’t need to compete, and they may even try to sabotage another’s success, or the appearance of it, so that they look better in comparison.

As I mentioned previously, these are 6 of the most common signs, but it’s only half of the full and complete list that a professional will use to assess a potential case of NPD.

If you believe that you, or a loved one, may be suffering from NPD, then it’s not a thing to be ashamed of, but it is a reason to seek professional help.

It’s important to remember that Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental health condition, not a personal failing, and there are treatments that can help.

The earlier we catch this condition and seek treatment, the better our chances are of finding an effective solution.

While there may not be a cure as such, there are many evidence-based treatments that can be incredibly effective, and they really pay off in the long run.

Even the biggest narcissists want to have happy, healthy, and loving relationships with others — but to do that, you need to treat the problem first.

The big thing to remember is that treatment is possible today, and so is a better life.

You don’t have to go it alone, but you do need to learn to recognize the problem, so that we know when to seek professional help.
