The Jack and Charlie Story
This Isn’t the End

Charlie’s Closing Note
I’m writing this from the small desk in our new third-floor apartment — overlooking a street that never quite sleeps.
Jack’s in the kitchen binge-drinking coffee, between unpacking the last of the boxes. Lucky has already claimed the sunniest spot on the windowsill, as if he’s lived here his whole life.
It’s strange, the quiet that comes after chaos. Not the silence of the cabin — that was a different kind of quiet, the kind that harbours old memories and lets them echo too loudly. Despite the usual city noises, this gives a living sense of peace. It makes me feel like I’m part of the world again.
The police have taken over the case. Ramsay’s Table is sealed off. Tan Wei Ting’s family has been notified. And the Banjo Man… well, wherever he is, I hope he’s found a place where the past can’t claw at him anymore.
As for me — I’ve signed the papers. The Meaning of Death is becoming a mini-series. I should feel triumphant, I suppose. But all I feel is a kind of responsibility. Stories matter. Truth matters. And sometimes the two meet in the middle, in the dark, where you least expect them.
