Meet terrio: Geospatial Data I/O in Pure Rust, No GDAL Required
Rasters, vectors and point clouds from one CLI, Python, JavaScript and Rust | Runs in the browser | An MCP server for AI agents 🦀🌍
Hello everyone, today I want to introduce a new open-source library that I think many GIS people will like: terrio.
If you have ever fought with installing GDAL in a Docker image, a serverless function, or a fresh laptop, you know the pain. Wheels that don’t match, PROJ data that can’t be found, a container that grows by hundreds of megabytes. terrio tries to solve exactly this: it reads, writes, converts and reprojects the common geospatial formats in pure Rust, with no C dependencies at all.
It comes from Qiusheng Wu (the creator of leafmap and geemap) and the opengeos organization, which also gave us the RustGIS desktop app I wrote about a few days ago in RustGIS v0.1.0 is Here. If RustGIS is the desktop app, terrio feels like the data engine you can drop into your own tools.
Let’s take a look.
What is terrio?
In one sentence, from the README: “Pure-Rust geospatial raster, vector and point cloud data I/O.”
