The Road to Federal Court: How Retaliation Became My Daily Life

It all started June 6th, when I called out Ashli Martin for speaking to me with blatant disrespect. Within thirty minutes of reporting the incident to her boss, Jennifer Hobgood, I suddenly had a late rent notice taped to my door. Not the usual building-wide notice that shows up days later — just mine. That’s not “policy.” That’s retaliation.

By June 11th, I had posted flyers around Van Allen. Flyers with truth in black and white: calling out management, calling out intimidation, calling out the gaslighting. That’s protected speech, plain and simple. But management didn’t see it that way. On June 13th, Hobgood emailed me, basically saying: take $4,000 for your bikes and belongings, pack up, and disappear. They didn’t want resolution. They wanted me gone.

Then came June 19th. The arrest. I spent 18 hours in jail — because Officer Norris, Van Allen’s “courtesy officer” who conveniently lives on-site rent-free, was right there helping them pull the strings. My so-called “crime” was nothing more than management weaponizing law enforcement against a tenant who spoke up.

But they weren’t finished. Access to the gym? Revoked. Sky Lounge? Revoked. Yoga classes? Forget it. All while I was still a paying tenant. No eviction order. No trespass notice. Just pure punishment.

July 10th, things got even darker. Heather McDonald, Northwood Ravin’s in-house counsel, floated an offer through my then-public defender: drop the criminal charges if I agreed to vacate the property. Think about that — criminal charges leveraged like bargaining chips in a lease dispute. Due process thrown straight in the trash.

And by July 17th, Brianna Cole escalated things again — running to the DA’s office claiming “witness tampering” because I sent legal notices. Legal filings, protected activity, suddenly turned into accusations of intimidation.

This is the playbook. Retaliate. Intimidate. Punish. And when that doesn’t work, try to trade away someone’s rights like it’s a used car deal.

That’s why I filed. That’s why we’re in court. And that’s why this story is going public.
